 The Pet Supplies Market

- and -

Litter Tray Segment

The US market for pet supplies (excluding food and sale of pets themselves) grows at a compounded annual rate of 6.6% and now approaches $6 billion. The pet cat population first exceeded the pet dog population in the eighties and the margin has continued to widen. The demand for premium pet products is growing at a faster rate than pet products in general. Premium products for cats is among the fastest growing segment of a rapidly growing market.

According to reports prepared for the American Pet Product Manufacturer's Association, there are now more than 65 million pet cats living in 35 million US households. More than 75% of domestic cats use a litter box and this percentage is growing. Over 30 million consumers purchase litter. Sales of litter trays are 12 to 15 million units per year in this country alone.

While most litter boxes are conventional open trays which use disposable litter and cost only a few dollars, premium products with retail prices up to $60 or even more are in heavy demand. Numerous system that do not perform as well as Tray Chic have been introduced. Despite poorer perfromance and higher prices, these systems have unit sales which are in the hundreds of thousands to millions of units per year.

Most litter trays are purchased in mass merchandise pet/discount department stores. In addition to the capture of a rapidly growing market share, pet superstores are helping to expand the total market for pet supplies with an emphasis on premium products.

Cat owners tend to be middle to upper class homeowners living in suburban areas. Typical buyers are environmentally conscious and are attracted to premium products. New households, elderly households, and single occupant households tend to be underrepresented. More affluent established families are overrepresented. Because cats are territorial, the number of litter trays in use depends more on the number of cats than the number of cat owning households. Cat ownership and litter use increases with education, career status, and income.
